Fluoride

Fluoride in Drinking Water

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in rocks, soil, and many water sources. It may also be added to some municipal drinking water systems as a public health measure to help reduce tooth decay and support dental health.

At low dosages, fluoride may help protect teeth. However, long-term exposure to elevated fluoride levels can affect tooth and bone development. Many municipal water treatment facilities add fluoride to drinking water for cavity prevention and may maintain levels around 1.5–2.5 mg/L. Fluoride concentrations above 5 mg/L may be harmful to tooth structure.

Fluoride can enter drinking water naturally through the breakdown of rocks, soils, and mineral deposits. It may also come from weathering, volcanic particle deposition, agricultural runoff, chemical fertilizers, septic systems, sewage treatment discharge, and certain industrial waste sources. Higher fluoride concentrations may be found in wastewater from glass manufacturing, steel production, aluminum processing, and foundry operations.

Organic fluorine may be present in vegetables, fruits, and nuts. Inorganic fluoride, such as sodium fluoride, may be associated with industrial byproducts and has also been used in some rodenticides.

The U.S. EPA maximum contaminant level, or MCL, for fluoride in drinking water is 4 mg/L.

Fluoride Removal from Water

Fluoride filtration systems and specialty filter media are designed to help reduce inorganic fluoride commonly found in municipal water supplies. The correct fluoride removal system depends on the water source, fluoride type, water chemistry, flow rate, and application.

For private wells, naturally occurring fluoride, organic fluorine, or complex water conditions, Healthy Hydro Supply Co recommends reviewing a water test before selecting a filtration system.

These fluoride filtration systems and media are intended to help reduce inorganic fluoride commonly found in municipal water supplies. If fluoride is organic or naturally occurring from a private well or other source, please contact Healthy Hydro Supply Co for help selecting the proper system recommendation.
