Description

Remove Arsenic from Your Drinking Water

Arsenic, also known as As, can enter drinking water from natural deposits in the earth as well as from agricultural, mining, metallurgical, and industrial activities. Surface pollutants related to arsenic can gradually move into groundwater through rain, melting snow, runoff, and the natural flow of groundwater.

One of the biggest concerns with arsenic is that it usually does not noticeably change the taste, smell, color, or appearance of drinking water. Like many water contaminants, arsenic may be present at potentially hazardous levels without giving any obvious warning signs.

Arsenic is not easily dissolved in water. When it is found in a water supply, it may be connected to mining operations, metallurgical processes, or runoff from agricultural areas where arsenic-containing materials were used as industrial poisons. Arsenic and phosphate can also substitute for one another chemically, meaning commercial-grade phosphate may contain some arsenic.

Arsenic is highly toxic and has been classified by the U.S. EPA as a carcinogen. The current Maximum Contaminant Level, or MCL, for arsenic is 0.010 mg/L, effective as of 01/23/06.

Pre-Filtration

Water first flows through a 20-inch sediment cartridge designed to remove common particulate matter such as:

  • Sediment
  • Silt
  • Sand
  • Dirt

This pre-filtration stage helps protect the rest of the system by reducing larger particles before the water reaches the arsenic reduction media.

Arsenic Removal Water Filter

After pre-filtration, water flows through an arsenic-reducing mineral tank designed to reduce arsenic from the water supply.

This is the core treatment stage of the system and is designed for homes that need targeted arsenic reduction as part of a whole-house water filtration setup.

Post-Filtration

After the arsenic reduction stage, water flows through a 20-inch solid carbon cartridge designed to help reduce remaining chemical contaminants, including:

  • Volatile organic compounds, also known as VOCs
  • Remaining insecticides
  • Pesticides
  • Industrial solvents

This post-filtration stage adds another layer of water treatment before the water continues through the home.

SMART Water Filter — Optional Upgrade

The optional SMART Water Filter adds a specialized multi-stage filtration blend for enhanced water quality.

Water flows through a proprietary SMART media blend that includes:

  • Two types of coconut-shell granular activated carbon, including catalytic carbon
  • Two types of Eagle Redox Alloys®, including 9500 and 6500
  • Anion exchange resin
  • Ceramic balls
  • Tourmaline balls

This blend is designed to help reduce or remove:

  • Heavy metals
  • Chlorine
  • Chloramine
  • Pesticides
  • Herbicides
  • Pharmaceutical by-products
  • Petroleum byproducts
  • Other inorganic substances

The ceramic and tourmaline balls are included to help enhance the water and maintain a more alkaline pH.

For customers researching filtration technology, granular activated carbon, also known as GAC, is commonly used to adsorb certain contaminants from water. The ERA® oxidation/reduction process is designed to support additional contaminant reduction through redox media technology.

Water Softener — Optional Upgrade

The optional water softener allows water to flow through an ion exchange resin and brine water conditioner for hardness reduction.

This upgrade is recommended because the arsenic reduction media may increase hardness in the water. Water is considered hard when it contains minerals such as calcium and magnesium.

Signs of hard water may include:

  • Staining on sinks, tubs, showers, and clothing
  • Reduced lather from shampoos and soaps
  • A filmy feeling on the skin
  • Limescale deposits in plumbing and water-using appliances

Hard water can increase the risk of limescale buildup inside household water systems. Limescale may block pipes and reduce the efficiency of hot water boilers and tanks, which can increase domestic water heating costs by approximately 15% to 20%.

Limescale can also damage household machinery and water-using equipment, including:

  • Laundry machines
  • Pipelines
  • Solar heating systems
  • Air conditioning units
  • Other water-based applications

Water softening can help extend the lifespan of household machines, plumbing lines, and water-based systems while improving overall system performance.

Additional Product Options

12 GPM UV Water Sterilizer

The optional 12 GPM UV water sterilizer is designed for microorganism control concerns. These microorganisms may include:

  • Bacteria
  • Viruses
  • Algae
  • Protozoa

A major advantage of UV treatment is that it can disinfect water faster than chlorine without the need for bulky retention tanks or adding harmful chemicals to drinking water.

Leak Detector Valve

The optional Leak Detector Valve is designed to detect a water leak within the water filter system and shut down the water supply to help prevent flooding and property damage.

Vacuum Breaker

A Vacuum Breaker is recommended for installation inline ahead of the water filter system.

This is used as a precaution against the rare occurrence of negative pressure, or vacuum pressure, in the water line. Negative pressure can potentially damage filter tanks and housings.

Metered Valve

These systems come standard with a timer valve, which runs the backwashing schedule based on a set number of days.

For example:

  • Timer valve: backwashes every 7 days
  • Metered valve: backwashes after a set number of gallons, such as 3,000 gallons

The optional metered valve runs the backwashing cycle based on water usage instead of a fixed day schedule.

Oxidation System

The optional Oxidation System uses ozone for efficient water oxidation and improved water quality.

Important to Know

Pinholes or rust may occur on stainless steel tanks in certain environments, especially when:

  • Humidity is high
  • Salt is present
  • Condensation remains on the tank and is not routinely wiped down

If your system will be exposed to any of these conditions, or if routine maintenance cannot be performed, a fiberglass tank is recommended.

Summary

This whole-house arsenic removal water filtration system is designed to reduce arsenic from incoming water before it reaches the home’s faucets, showers, appliances, and plumbing. The system includes sediment pre-filtration, an arsenic-reducing mineral tank, and carbon post-filtration, with optional upgrades including a SMART filter, water softener, 12 GPM UV sterilizer, leak detector valve, vacuum breaker, metered valve, and ozone oxidation system.
